RAVEL Introduction and Allegro
DEBUSSY Sonata for Flute, Viola, and Harp
TCHAIKOVSKY String Sextet in D minor, “Souvenir de Florence,” Op. 70
This program opens with Maurice Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro for Harp, Flute, Clarinet and String Quartet, written in 1905 to showcase the new chromatic harp. Claude Debussy’s Sonata for flute, viola, and harp, originally planned to feature a flute, oboe, and harp has since set an instrumentation standard for ensembles. Sketched in part during his visit to Florence, Italy, Pyotr Illyich Tchaikovsky’s “Souvenir de Florence” is set in a four-movement form which includes Russian and folk-like melodies typical of the emerging Russian compositions of the time.
