Andreas Delfs, conductor
This second concert in the Sunday Matinee Series begins with the Overture to Lucio Silla by J.C. Bach, which was written in 1775 when the composer was 40 years old and at the prime of his career. (Mozart, too wrote an opera about Lucio Silla in 1772, but he was 16 at the time.) Frank Martin’s Concerto for 7 Winds, Timpani, Percussion and Strings was written in 1949 for the Bernische Musikgesellschaft. The seven solo instruments are so different in character and playing technique, which makes the piece a brilliant study in composition and balance. Mozart’s Symphony No 41 – the “Jupiter Symphony,” is the longest (and last) of the great composer’s symphonic works. Regarded by many critics as one of the greatest symphonies in classical music, it is not known if it was ever performed during Mozart’s lifetime, but your RPO performs it here for you.
